Frontex: We expect more money for the costs of external border protection!

2019. 04. 17.

The European Parliament voted a draft regulation today on the strengthening of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex). “If properly enforced, the legislation will provide some help in protecting the Union’s external borders. However, what is really needed is for the EU to provide greater financial support for border protection cost for those Member States that effectively protect the external boarder, including Hungary” said Fidesz MEP Kinga Gál.

Strengthening the border protection has always been the primary objective of the Hungarian Government. At EU level, it is necessary to increase border protection efforts, but giving more capacity to Frontex alone will not achieve this intended purpose. Kinga Gál pointed out: “We have taken the lion’s share of the protection of external borders: we have erected a fence, trained and deployed three thousand border patrols. That is how we protected Europe, but so far we have not received any EU funding for this purpose. That is why we expect the EU to reimburse our expenses on external boarder protection.”
