The humanitarian situation in Gaza has been discussed at Tuesday’s plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. During the debate, MEP Kinga Gál, the president of the Fidesz European Parliament group, called for the immediate release of the kidnapped hostages. In her speech, she stated: Hungary condemns the brutal terrorist attack by Hamas and recognizes Israel’s right to self-defense and the elimination of terrorist organizations. At the same time, Kinga Gál emphasized that it is extremely important to avoid further escalation of the situation in the Middle East and to provide humanitarian assistance to the civilian population, but at the same time it is necessary to ensure that this aid does not fall into the hands of terrorist organizations in any form.
Kinga Gál also emphasized during the debate: Hungary’s position is clear and unchanged. “We strongly condemn the brutal terrorist attack by Hamas. Israel has the right to self-defense and to eliminate terrorist organizations. Hamas must stop the practice of using civilians as human shields in the conflict.”
Kinga Gál added: the release of all hostages must be a priority. “It is amazing that representatives of the International Red Cross are still being prevented from providing their basic care. In order to avoid a humanitarian crisis, it is of utmost importance that humanitarian aid reaches the civilian population in need, but at the same time, this aid cannot fall into the hands of terrorist organizations.”
Regarding the region, Kinga Gál said that the events in the Middle East are taking an increasingly worrying direction, and this is exactly what the terrorist organizations wanted to achieve. “The escalation of the situation must be avoided, as it would trigger another wave of migration towards Europe. We support negotiations between the countries of the region in order to avoid the outbreak of a regional war. We must strengthen our mutual commitment in the fight against anti-Semitism and to avoid escalation in the region. Concrete steps must be taken to strengthen the existing relations between Europe and Israel, since Europe’s strategic interest is the security of Israel and the peace and stability of the Middle East,” Kinga Gál stated.
