Today, Hungary declared a state of emergency in three counties hit by a toxic mud spill which left four people dead and more than 100 injured, according to state officials. The state of emergency was called in the Veszprém, Győr-Moson-Sopron and Vas counties in the west of the country after a reservoir of residue from an aluminium plant broke, releasing a flood of toxic red mud that swamped the villages of Devecser and Kolontár and threatened others.
"On behalf of the EPP Group, I send my sincere condolences to the families of the victims. I am in continuous coordination with the Hungarian and European authorities on the developments. I would like to wish strength to all of those who are fighting hard to protect their homes, towns and the region's nature. I wish them success in their efforts to stop the spread of the pollution", said Joseph Daul.
