EU accession to the ECHR will improve human rights

EU accession to the ECHR will improve human rights

2010. 05. 19.

The pre-condition for opening the accession to the Council of Europe's ECHR is the reason why the Council will reach a decision about the final content of the Commission's draft document produced in March. The Parliament's report and opinions will contribute to the finalization of the document and also to the success of negotiations.

In the debate regarding the vote, Kinga Gál stressed that the accession will represent an added-value for EU citizens in that the enforcement of human rights will be extended by the institutions in an understandable and accessible way.

The Union's accession to the Convention will be an unique experiment with the accession only being successful if it enhances existing instruments in already well- functioning institutions. Accession to the Convention will play an important role of great political and legal importance in the creation of a continent-wide area of human rights.
