Controversy over the Olivér Boldoghy case

2011. 11. 23.

There are serious legal consequences to divesting someone from their citizenship. It is totally unacceptable that a European Union member state divests one of its citizens of their citizenship because they have become a citizen of another European Union member state.

The action taken is contrary to the principles of the European Union. The message sent by this action is that Slovakia regards its own citizens when they become citizens of another state as worthless, unnecessary and dispensable. Meanwhile, the European Union's major tenet is the respect for a European citizen's rights and dignity.

The Hungarian EPP Group said that it will raise the issue at every European forum available and will use all the tools available to stand up against the infringement of Olivér Boldoghy’s rights or that of any other citizen.
