The political attack on the Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement is derogatory

“There is real hysteria around the European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi, which of course can also serve as a distraction from the corruption scandal that broke out recently in connection with the case of a left-wing politician. The reality is that the professional performance of the Commissioner for Enlargement is outstanding, in his statements he represents the official position of the Union, which is supported by the position of the spokesperson of the Commission” – stated MEP Kinga Gál, President of the European Parliament Delegation of Fidesz, in connection with the plenary vote on the annual report of the implementation of the common security and defence policy.

A vote on the annual report on the implementation of the common security and defence policy was held today in Strasbourg, at the plenary session of the European Parliament. After the vote, MEP Kinga Gál emphasized that activist-type parliamentary reports typical of NGOs are harmful to the security and defence policy of the European Union as a whole. “As I stressed in my speech yesterday, an example of this is the unprecedented and unworthy criticism in the actual security and defence policy report against the European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi, who plays a key role in the EU’s enlargement policy to regain momentum. This is unacceptable!” – added the MEP.

“There is real hysteria around the person of Olivér Várhelyi, which of course can also serve as a distraction from the recent corruption in Brussels that broke out in the European Parliament,” said Kinga Gál. “On the other hand, the reality is that the enlargement commissioner’s professional performance is outstanding, and in his official statements he represents the official position of the European Union. This is also supported by the position of the spokesperson of the Commission, according to which the commissioner applies the revised methodology during his work, which focuses even more on respect for democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights,” the MEP emphasized.

“The accusations of the anti-enlargement left without factual evidence are a serious risk from the point of view of the future of the European Union, as this may even represent a serious obstacle in the course of enlargement. In addition, Olivér Várhelyi also takes into account practical and economically beneficial aspects for the EU, such as the development of infrastructure and energy networks, the transition to green energy, and the contribution to certain key investments in relation to the countries waiting to join the EU.” – said Kinga Gál.
