An era ended in the Hungarian media debate

Hungarian daily Magyar Nemzet published an interview with HU MEP Kinga GÁL (EPP), Vice-Chair of the EP Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE).

According to the article, an era ended in the Hungarian media debate when Thorbjorn JAGLAND, Secretary-General of the Council of Europe announced at a press brunch on 29 January that Hungary made a significant progress in the media issue. MEP GÁL thinks that double standard is used concerning the media debate. Based on the criticism against Hungary, the media regulation of any Member State could be criticized which shows that the debate has political motifs. At the meeting of the EP Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs on Monday two weeks ago, no one wanted to listen to the Hungarian arguments. MEP GÁL (EPP) says that no concrete example was ever brought for media censorship in Hungary. The EP resolution on preparing a report about Hungary was adopted in February 2012. Under normal circumstances, a similar procedure should be finished within a few months and either removed from the agenda or come to a resolution.
